Catholic education in southern Sudan, yesterday and today

A second stage of evangelization began in the 19th century. It included the territory of southern Sudan. Even in the very first missions, established both by Catholics and by Protestants, there were schools. This was in accord with missionary practice common at that time, which put great emphasis on schooling, making the missions in Africa the precursors of European-type education. This expanded all over the continent, especially after 1918, to such a degree that this period is sometimes referred to as the “golden age” of missionary schools. This development was not stopped even by two civil wars. It continues to progress since Sudan’s achieving independence even despite another—this time in southern Sudan—civil war.
