Waldemar Cisło, Jarosław Różański, Maciej Ząbek (eds.), Collectanea Sudanica, vol. 2, Pelplin: Bernardinum, Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski University in Warsaw 2020.
As was noted in the first volume of this series, the Collectanea Sudanica is interdisciplinary, dealing with the cultures of the Sudan macroregion. This region is treated in a simplified manner as a cultural and geographic belt dividing the sands and rocks of the Sahara from the forested area of Africa. The intent of this series is to bring together geographers, archeologists, ethnologists, linguists, culture specialists, political scientists, economists, sociologists, and all others engaged in the study of this region of Africa. The texts presented in the second volume therefore do not have a thematic unity. Their order of presentation in this volume traces the direction from west to east Africa. For this reason, the opening text—by two Senegalese authors, Cheikhouna Lo and Bara Ndiaye—entitled Islam, traditions locales et culture en Sénégambie du XIX siècle à nos jours. L’exemple de la Mouridiya (Islam, local traditions and culture in Senegambia from the 19th century to the present day. The example of Muridiya) concerns Islam in what was once Senegambia. The next two texts, authored by Nigerians Aboreng Useni James and Joseph Gotus Jilong, tell of the difficult social, religious, political, and economic situation in northern Nigeria, which is also struggling with religion-inspired terrorism. The succeeding text, by Jarosław Różański, takes us a little bit to the east again, to northern Cameroon. The article, entitled Translations of Biblical Texts into the Gidar Language (Northern Cameroon) is on the history and difficulties of translating biblical texts into the language of the small Gidar nation.
The largest block of texts in this volume is related to the past and the present of the Republic of the Sudan. Texts by Katarzyna Mich (Application of inculturation criteria in studies on the indigenous nature of the Church in Nubia) as well as Piotr Maliński, Adrian Chlebowski, Ali Elmirghani Ahmed (Polish Research on the People and Cultures of Kordofan – History and the Most Recent Results), tell of the rich past archeologists have deciphered in this region of Africa. In a text entitled The Impact of Climate Change on the Conflict in the Western Sudanese Region of Darfur: is Climate Change the cause of the Crisis? Nagmeldin Karamalla-Gaiballa writes on problems of climate change in Darfur. A text by Maciej Ząbek tells of Sudanese in Poland and Katarzyna Grabska writes about migrations of women from Eritrea to Khartoum (‘Wasting time’: migratory trajectories of adolescence among Eritrean refugee girls in Khartoum). The volume concludes with the text Crossroads of Regional Integration in Africa and Question about Monetary Union, written by Tomasz W. Kolasiński.
